I read that you can use metronidazole for the 2nd and 3rd trimester for treatment of bacterial vaginosis and trichomonas. What do you do in first trimester?

Metronidazole crosses the placenta in pregnancy and experimentally has been demonstrated to be carcinogenic in animals. However, clotrimazole suppository is currently the DOC of some medical practitioners for patients with trichomoniasis in the first trimester of pregnancy. Clotrimazole mainly offers symptomatic treatment but may cure as many as 50% of infections. If this initial treatment fails, a single 2-g dose of metronidazole can be used during the second or third trimesters of pregnancy.
